Privacy Policy

Handiwork LLC (“Handiwork”, “we”, “our”, or “us”) operates the Handiwork platform and related services (the “Service”).

This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, store, and share information when individuals and businesses access or use the Service.

This Privacy Policy applies to our website, applications, platform interfaces, integrations, and other services that link to this policy.

By using the Service, you acknowledge that your information may be collected and used as described in this Privacy Policy.

This Privacy Policy applies to information collected when businesses create accounts, manage operational workflows, generate invoices, communicate with customers, or process payments through the Service.

2. Information We Collect

We collect several types of information in order to operate and improve the Service.

Account Information

When users create accounts or access the Service, we may collect information such as names, email addresses, business names, contact information, login credentials, and other account registration details.

Business and Operational Data

Businesses using the Service may submit information related to their operations, including project information, job records, customer records, invoices, communications, and other business-related data.

Customer Information Submitted by Businesses

Businesses may input information about their customers when using the Service, including names, contact information, addresses, and other information necessary to manage jobs or generate invoices. Handiwork processes this information on behalf of the Business using the Service.

Payment and Transaction Information

When payments are processed through the Service, transaction information may be collected, including payment amounts, billing details, transaction identifiers, and payment status. Payment processing services may be provided by third-party payment processors, and payment information may be handled directly by those providers. See also “Identity Verification for Payouts” below.

Technical and Usage Information

We may automatically collect certain technical information when users access the Service, such as IP addresses, device information, browser type, operating system, usage activity, log files, and system performance data.

Identity Verification for Payouts

Before Handiwork pays out money to a business, we require a person from the business to verify their identity. That person’s legal name must match the name of the person on the business’s payout account with Stripe. We use Stripe Identity, a service of our payment processor Stripe, to do this. The check is completed on Stripe’s own hosted pages, not on Handiwork.

  • What you provide to Stripe. You photograph a government-issued ID document and take a live selfie. Stripe compares your face to the photo on the document to confirm that you are the person on the ID. This comparison uses facial geometry, which is biometric information. Stripe collects your consent to this at the start of the check, before anything is captured.
  • What Stripe keeps. Stripe collects and retains the ID images and selfie under its own privacy policy and retention rules. Handiwork does not receive or store those images.
  • What Handiwork receives and keeps. Stripe tells us whether the check passed, along with your verified name, your date of birth, and the document’s number, issue date, country, and type. Stripe may also send other details from your document; we do not use or store them. We use your name, date of birth, and document details only at the moment of the check, to confirm that the name matches the name on the payout account and to make keyed one-way codes. We do not store them: we do not keep your name from the check, your date of birth, your document number, or your ID number. We keep the verification status, its dates, which member of the business completed it, the result of the name check, and the one-way codes. The codes are made with a secret key and are designed so that your identity details cannot be read back from them. We use them only to detect when the same person or the same identity document is used to open more than one account, and to confirm later that the payout account still names the person who was checked.
  • Name check. We compare the verified name with the name of the person on the business’s payout account. To help the right person verify, we show the members of the business that person’s first name and last initial. If the names do not match, payouts stay on hold until the person named on the payout account verifies, or until our team reviews them.
  • Why. To confirm who is being paid, to prevent fraud and duplicate accounts, and to meet our obligations to our payment partners.
  • If you do not verify. Payouts stay on hold until the check is completed. You can still use the rest of the Service. If a check cannot be completed, contact support@handiwork.app.

You can read how Stripe handles this information in Stripe’s privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy. Handiwork keeps the verification status and its related records as described under “Data Retention.” We keep the one-way codes after your account is closed or deleted, so that we can detect a previously verified person or identity document being used to open a new account. The codes are not deleted with your account, including when you make a deletion request under “User Rights.”

Communications

If users contact Handiwork or communicate through the Service, we may collect information related to those communications, including support requests, messages, or other correspondence.

Analytics and Product Improvement

We may collect information about how the Service is used in order to improve functionality, monitor performance, and develop new features.

Cookies and Similar Technologies

The Service may use cookies, session tokens, or similar technologies to operate platform features, maintain user sessions, improve security, and analyze usage of the Service.

Our marketing website and application also use analytics cookies and similar browser storage (such as local storage) to recognize a returning visitor across pages and, where applicable, across our related subdomains (for example, between our marketing website and the application you sign up for). This lets us understand, in aggregate, how visitors find and use the Service — for example, which page or search led to a signup — without requiring us to ask you to log in first. These analytics cookies do not access the content of your device or files.

Our analytics provider may also record how the Service is used during a visit (a “session replay”), including what appears on screen and information entered into it. These recordings may include business and customer information. We take steps designed to limit the recording of sensitive information, and we use session recordings to operate, support, secure, and improve the Service.

We advertise online and work with advertising partners (for example, Google and Meta/Facebook). These partners may place their own cookies, pixels, or similar technologies on our marketing website and in your browser when you visit our website or view or click one of our ads. Through them, our advertising partners may collect information such as the pages you visit on our website, the ads you view or click, and whether you sign up. We and our advertising partners use this information to measure how our ads perform and to show you Handiwork ads on other websites and apps (sometimes called “retargeting” or “interest-based advertising”). When you sign up for the Service after clicking one of our ads, we may also send that advertising partner the ad’s click identifier and your email address or phone number in hashed (scrambled) form, so the partner can match your signup to the ad. Our advertising partners may also combine this information with other information they hold about you, as described in their own privacy policies. See “Your Choices About Advertising” below for ways to limit this.

Opting out does not stop you from seeing ads; it means the ads you see may be less relevant to you. Opt-outs that rely on cookies apply only to the browser and device where you set them, and may need to be set again if you clear your cookies.

3. How We Use Information

Handiwork uses collected information for a variety of operational purposes, including to:

Provide and Operate the Service

We use information to create and manage accounts, operate platform features, manage workflows, generate invoices, and process transactions through the Service.

Facilitate Payments

Information may be used to process payments, manage billing activity, facilitate payouts, verify the identity of a person from the business before payouts, and coordinate with third-party payment processors.

Communicate with Users

We may use contact information to send service-related communications, product updates, security alerts, support responses, and other operational notifications related to the Service.

Improve and Develop the Service

Information may be used to analyze usage patterns, monitor system performance, improve platform functionality, and develop new features or services.

Information may also be used to develop automated systems, analytics tools, machine learning models, or other technologies intended to improve the functionality, reliability, and effectiveness of the Service.

Maintain Security and Prevent Fraud

We may use information to detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, unauthorized access, payment abuse, or other activities that could harm the Service or its users.

Information may be used to comply with applicable laws, regulations, legal processes, or governmental requests.

Combining Information

Handiwork may combine information collected from different sources in order to operate, secure, and improve the Service.

4. Sharing of Information

Handiwork may share information in the following circumstances:

Service Providers

We may share information with third-party service providers that help operate, host, maintain, or support the Service. These providers may include infrastructure hosting providers, communications providers, analytics providers, and other technology vendors that assist with platform operations.

Handiwork Support Staff

Handiwork support staff may access a Business’s account, including viewing information and making changes on the Business’s behalf, to provide support or resolve issues. Every such access is logged.

Analytics and Advertising Partners

We use a third-party analytics provider (currently PostHog) to understand how our website and application are used, as described under “Cookies and Similar Technologies” above. Our advertising partners (for example, Google and Meta/Facebook) receive limited information about visits to our marketing website, the ads people view or click, and whether a signup followed (including, for a signup, a hashed email address or phone number), through their cookies and pixels and from us, to measure our ads and to show Handiwork ads on other websites and apps, as described under “Cookies and Similar Technologies” and “Your Choices About Advertising” above. We do not share business or customer operational data (job records, invoices, your customers’ contact information, etc.) with advertising partners. Service providers, including our analytics provider, may process such data on our behalf as described in this Privacy Policy.

Payment Processing

Payment-related information, and information needed to verify the identity of a person from the business before payouts, may be shared with or collected by third-party payment processors (currently Stripe) in order to process transactions, manage billing activity, verify identity, and facilitate payouts.

We may disclose information if required to do so by law, regulation, legal process, or governmental request, or if we believe disclosure is necessary to protect the rights, property, or safety of Handiwork, users of the Service, or others.

Business Transfers

If Handiwork is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, asset sale, or other corporate transaction, information may be transferred as part of that transaction.

Protection of the Service

We may share information when necessary to investigate suspected fraud, abuse, security incidents, or violations of our Terms of Service.

Aggregated or Anonymized Information

Handiwork may share aggregated or anonymized information that does not reasonably identify individuals for purposes such as analyzing usage trends, improving the Service, or providing platform-level insights.

5. Data Retention

Handiwork retains information for as long as necessary to operate the Service, fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce agreements.

Information associated with business accounts may be retained for the duration of the account’s use of the Service and for extended periods thereafter where permitted by applicable law.

Handiwork may retain information for purposes such as security monitoring, fraud prevention, financial recordkeeping, platform improvement, and compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

Businesses may request a copy of their data by contacting support@handiwork.app; otherwise, businesses are responsible for retaining any data they wish to preserve from the Service.

In some circumstances, information may be anonymized or aggregated so that it can no longer reasonably be associated with an identifiable individual.

6. Security

Handiwork implements reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information collected through the Service.

These measures may include safeguards intended to protect against unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration, or destruction of information.

However, no method of transmitting information over the internet or storing information electronically can be guaranteed to be completely secure. As a result, Handiwork cannot guarantee the absolute security of information processed through the Service.

Handiwork may update or modify its security practices as the Service evolves and new technologies or operational requirements emerge.

Users are responsible for maintaining the security of their account credentials and for controlling access to their accounts.

7. User Rights

Depending on applicable laws, individuals may have certain rights regarding their personal information.

These rights may include the ability to request access to information held about them, request correction of inaccurate information, or request deletion of certain information.

Requests regarding personal information may be submitted through the contact methods described in this Privacy Policy.

Handiwork may take reasonable steps to verify the identity of individuals before responding to requests involving personal information.

Businesses using the Service are responsible for managing information about their own customers and for responding to requests from their customers where applicable.

Certain information may be retained where necessary to comply with legal obligations, enforce agreements, resolve disputes, or maintain the integrity and security of the Service.

Automated Systems and Model Ownership

Businesses retain ownership of the operational data they submit to the Service. However, Handiwork retains ownership of the underlying platform technology, including automated systems, analytics tools, machine learning models, and other technologies developed or used to operate or improve the Service.

Outputs or insights generated through automated features of the Service are considered part of the Service functionality and do not transfer ownership of the underlying systems or models to users.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

Handiwork may update or modify this Privacy Policy from time to time.

When changes are made, the updated Privacy Policy will be posted through the Service and the “Last Updated” date will be revised accordingly.

Handiwork may provide notice of significant changes through the Service or other communications.

Continued use of the Service after an updated Privacy Policy becomes effective indicates acknowledgment of the updated policy.
